Replacing Old Steps with a New Porch Stoop: Before & After

This is a residential project we worked on a number of years ago. The house is a beautiful free classic Victorian and was about 90+ years old at the time. There had been some remodeling done to the house over the years by previous owners, both inside and outside. Most of which had not been done very well, aesthetically speaking.

The back porch of the house became an enclosed porch as part of one of those earlier remodels. There is an interior door from the kitchen, and one from the study, that open to the porch which made it an often used space.

After the new homeowner made some beautiful interior changes and restored the original character of the house, the enclosed porch received some much needed restoration, too.

One element that needed attention was the set of outdoor steps to the enclosed porch. The photos below show what it looked like beforehand – basic concrete block steps with a pipe railing that served as access to the porch.

The existing steps were bland and solely utilitarian at best. There was no landing to step onto when exiting or entering the porch. Not only that, to say it lacked architectural character, would have been an understatement.

The New Porch Stoop

Since we love traditional residential architecture, we were excited to be able to make an improvement to this part of the house with a porch stoop that would have as much architectural character as the house.

The basic elements of the new porch stoop included:

  • A landing that provided a level and roomy stepping area when entering and exiting the porch
  • Continuing the architecture of the house
  • Wood was the choice building material for the stoop which was compatible with the character of the house
  •  Redirecting the steps to a lower landing area that was safely away from the driveway

We wish the day that this photo was taken had not been so overcast, but you can see what a difference the new porch made!

The after photo shows additional home improvements that were made to the exterior of the enclosed porch: a new storm door, the old lattice panels were replaced, and the siding was repainted in a neutral shade which highlighted the red brick veneer of the house. The paint colors of the new porch stoop (white for the posts, railing, risers, and balustrade; and medium grey for the step and deck flooring) were chosen to match the colors used on the large front porch of the house.
