Sprucing Up the Landscaping

Overgrown or neglected landscape beds can really detract from the beauty and enjoyment of your yard. If these areas are visible from the street, they can really detract from your home’s curb appeal, too.

We worked on this residential project a bit ago. We added many beautiful features and amenities to the house’s various outdoor spaces. Some of the additions included an arbor and lattice fencing, a dry laid stone wall, a porch, and a few new landscaped areas.

One of those areas was a small landscape bed between the house and the driveway that had become overgrown and rather messy, and was in need of some sprucing up. Most homeowners can relate to this. We’ve all had to tackle landscaping projects like this, where everything needed to be cleared away, and then basically start over.

Since this area is highly visible, being right next to the entry steps to the porch and front door, sprucing up this area made a lot of sense, to help create an inviting entrance.

Actually, giving a brand new look to an area can be exciting, and it’s a great opportunity to take ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of the project, letting you see what a great improvement was made by all you hard work.

We started by having all of the old overgrown shrubs, and all the weeds removed. We checked the ground slope to make sure there was positive drainage away from the house foundation.

The landscape plants included shrubs for near the foundation wall, with evergreen groundcover (they were small sprigs when installed) planted in front of the shrubs. The ‘after’ photo was taken right after all the plants were installed. The groundcover was to eventually grow to be kept as a trimmed and tidy border.

The shrubs will stay fairly low in height so that the beautiful stone foundation wall remains visible. The texture of this gorgeous stone really adds a wonderful detail and a lot of visual appeal, not just to this area, but all around the house.

To finish, the landscape bed was topped with a layer of mulch, which helps in controlling weed growth, controlling erosion of the soil, and provides a beautiful finishing look.

Nice work. It’s would be a shame to hide that foundation and sill,
