Heuchera is the plant family name for Coral Bells, and there are so many coral bell perennial varieties that it would be very easy to have several favorites that you’d love to see in your garden. This week’s perennial is the ‘Pretty Polly’ Coral Bell.
One of the features of the coral bell that first caught my eye are the tiny bell shaped flowers atop long slender stems. I thought how perfect they would be in a cut flower arrangement, giving the bouquet wisps of delicate color tucked in between larger flowers.
The ‘Pretty Polly’ coral bell is perfect for both sunny and shady spots, and does well in well-drained normal to acidic soil – good companion plants in a bed of azaleas, blue hydrangea, or other acidic loving plants.
I would love this perennial for my yard – the pink flowers are just gorgeous, and it’s wavy bright summery green leaves add visual interest along the ground through the winter – the leaves are very striking with the pink.
‘Pretty Polly’ has so many great features like, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies, has a wide hardiness zone (3 – 8), tolerates salty coastal environments, and has an early to late summer bloom season – they are blooming in this area (zone 6) right now!
‘Pretty Polly’ is part of a group of coral bell hybrids, and its botanical name is Heuchera x brizoides ‘Pretty Polly’.
Sometimes, trying to buy a particular perennial, one that you have just fallen in love with, at your local garden nursery can be frustrating because their limited inventory. Thankfully, nowadays there are online sources for buying those particular plants for the garden, including seeds, bulbs, and perennials.
