Coreopsis ‘Early Sunrise’ ~ A Perennial a Week

This week we’re featuring a perennial with a pretty golden yellow flower that attracts butterflies. It is Coreopsis ‘Early Sunrise’ and it has a full semi-double flower with an almost daisy-like look, and blooms early summer to fall. We found out that it is also an All-America Selections winner.

We discovered ‘Early Sunrise’ while searching for perennials that will bring butterflies into the garden. Butterflies are so mesmerizing to watch as they dance and flutter about from flower to flower.

One of the many wonderful things about this perennial is its ability to grow in just about any type of soil, even in shallow rocky soil. It grows about 18” to 24” in height, with about an 18” spread. It grows in Zones 4 – 9, is one of the yellow flowering perennials for sun, and tolerates hot dry conditions (soil moisture dry to medium).

Besides attracting butterflies, ‘Early Sunrise’ is deer resistant, and is perfect as a cut flower. It can be easily grown from seed – seems like a great way to get a bunch of plants all at once to transplant around the yard. Deadheading the spent blooms will help to produce more buds, and helps to keep the garden tidy from new seedlings popping up since this perennial re-seeds easily (although new seedlings may be welcomed!).

We think the bright golden yellow bloom color would look great in front of an evergreen backdrop, or have a country charm planted along a running white post and board fence.

Besides giving gardens beautiful color, it’s an added bonus that some perennial flowers attract butterflies.  What plants do you use to attract butterflies to your yard?
