Christmas Porchscape

The Christmas season is a great time for designing a porchscape – so many shades of red and green to work with, should it be bright and whimsical, traditional, or a mix of both? A classic theme, or a farmhouse in the country theme? So much to think about!

The inspiration for our design began with the architectural style of the house that one of us owns. It is a Minimal Traditional style house, a style that has its roots deeply planted in the earlier Revival periods.

So keeping with the traditional style of the house, we designed a porchscape to complement it. It is simple, yet with a classic elegance.

Beginning at the brick walk that meets the porch steps, there are two large planters overflowing with fir and balsam evergreen boughs flanking the wide steps creating an entry feature to welcome guests to the porch. Each is accented with stems of red berries and pine cones.

Above the steps, the arched fascia board is trimmed in evergreen garland with two large festive red bows at each end, to complete the entry to the porch. Since garland is used both here, and surrounding the door, we thought it was a good idea to keep this feature more simple.

Once in the porch itself, simple touches like a small wood sled decked out in holly rests on the bench, along with a small tabletop Christmas tree both adding to the festive charm of the season.

The tabletop evergreen Christmas tree creates a bright and whimsical addition to the corner of the porch with its red ribbon garland, peppermint candy accents, and splashes of red berries. The tree is one of those undecorated trees from the craft store, and we added the festive touches.

The beautiful holiday coir doormat is just perfect for this porchscape.

Garland & Door Wreath

The front door is surrounded with two 9 feet evergreen strands of garland lighted with tiny white lights. Simple, yet elegant!

We experimented with placing the front door wreath in a couple of spots: on the storm door, and on the decorative wreath holder post. We thought it looked good in both places!

The three wreaths on the living room windows, to the right of the porch, tie very nicely into the porchscape in classic style, with only a simple red bow on each for accent.

Hanging the Garland

We used the a 3M Command product – Cord Bundlers. They were roomy enough to easily hold the bulky garland. They can be removed without damaging the surface of the wood. Refill adhesive strips enable the bundlers to be used over and over again.
