Paver Restraint Edging

Paver restraint edging will keep pavers in place, just as you had installed them. It resists ground forces that can cause lateral movement resulting in displaced pavers, overtime.

A successful paver project is the end result of using proper construction methods and materials. It all starts by preparing a stable subbase (soil below the aggregate base), and constructing a durable and sound compacted aggregate base, both of which provide the foundation for the pavers.

You can learn how to create a proper foundation for a pavement project here.

One part of a paver project that frequently gets installed incorrectly, or even omitted, is the paver restraint edging, typically used in projects with sand joint applications.

Various manufacturers make paver restraint edging products, and each has their own variation in design, but basically the principle behind the product is the same. Select a high quality edging product that is constructed of heavy duty PVC that offers the flexibility of use whether you are using it for edging a straight run of pavers, or on a curve edge. It should also allow you to be able cut it to a desired length to fit the needs of your project.

For residential projects, we have used the PVC type, and with much success. The PVC edging is possibly the most commonly used product for residential projects. There are aluminum paver restraint edging products, but they may not be as easy to use for the DIY homeowner.

When installed correctly, the paver restraint edging will not be visible at all, which provides for a clean looking edge to your walk, patio, and driveway. The above photo shows the paver edging installed correctly. A proper constructed base will extend at least 6 inches beyond the finished surface edge to provide optimal support for the pavement and for load weight the particular pavement was designed to bear. The paver restraint edging is placed on top of, and secured to, the compacted aggregate base.

The paver restraint edging typically uses 8”, 10”, or 12” spikes (should be non-corrosive) inserted into the pre-formed openings in the PVC edging. The spikes are secured by hammering them into the compacted aggregate base.

Paver restraint edging keeps the edge of the pavers aligned and prevents them from shifting due to ground pressures and load weights. This edging can be used for any type of paver with a sand joint application, whether you are using clay or concrete pavers or a natural stone paver.

Both the paver restraint edging and the spikes are typically available at landscape material suppliers. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for the installation of their products.
