A New Look for an Old Storm Door

Painting my aluminum storm door proved to be a worthwhile project. It gave the door an updated look, and, not having to buy a new storm door right now, was an added bonus.

Even though the door is around 20 years old, overall, it is in good mechanical condition, despite having a few dings in the lower panel. But it was certainly showing its age – it looked lackluster, and the finish was peeling, which had completely worn off along the edges in spots. The hope was that a little elbow grease and a new coat of paint, would revitalize its appearance.

How to Paint a Storm Door

The prep work for painting a metal storm door included taping everything with painters tape, like around the hinges and door trim, since I did not remove the storm door to paint it. The renovation began with sanding the entire door with fine grade sandpaper. This prepared the surface for the primer and the paint, and ultimately a smooth finish.

Next, the door was washed to get rid of the dust from sanding, and any dirt. After the door was primed, a latex paint was applied for the finish coat. The paint was Sherwin Williams in a sage color, leftover from a previous project. Both the primer and the paint were for use in exterior applications.

The primer and the paint were applied with a brush. It may be quicker to remove your storm door and spray paint it if you have a paint sprayer. Also, home improvement spray paints, like Rustoleum, would be convenient, but color choice is limited. I have to say, all in all, using a brush for this project worked out really well for me.

I think the results were great. The surface dried to a smooth finish, and the color really gave the storm door the updated look it so needed.  ~M

I found your post through Pinterest looking for info on how to paint a storm door. I noticed you guys have a self made latch for the door that looks like it was a fix. Our latch broke (it was plastic) and the home improvement store said the only thing to fix it was to buy a new door (crazy!). Can you tell me where you got the latch piece for the door?

    Thanks!!!

    • Casey,

I believe the latch on my door is the original one, at least it looks like it is. It wasn’t locking securely, so I offset it from the door jam a bit, and now it locks perfectly. I bought an entire metal handle and latch set to replace old parts on another storm door on my house – got it in the replacement parts section for storm/screen doors at the hardware store. ~M
