A Change to the Fence Design & a Trip to the Garden Center

A change order needed to be made for the new fence (I decided to use 6×6 posts instead of 4×4), and it was mailed to the contractor. Then a road trip to New Albany, Ohio to visit a landscape nursery was on the agenda, to check out what plants they had in stock for the landscape area in front of the new fence. Sometimes, it really helps to look at the actual plant to get a feel for how it will look.

A few weeks ago we told you about the property survey that was completed for the new fence that I am having built along one of the side property lines.

The 6′ screen fence is now under construction, and I’ve been having trouble deciding on which type of small ornamental tree to place in front of the new fence, because the planting area will be tight on space. I’m thinking there will be three of them planted about six feet apart, and one of my main concerns is that the trees don’t hide the fence because I think it is really going to be a beautiful fence.

Some of the types of trees I’m considering using are: serviceberry, a small dogwood, or a small magnolia. The three trees will be all of the same type, and they will be multi-stemmed (meaning many slender trunks). The multi-stemmed habit will mean that the tree branches will have an open and airy canopy, and this will allow the new fence to be visible. I want the fence to take center stage, followed close behind by the trees.

So betterOutdoorLivingatHome took a trip to the landscape nursery to see if they had the trees I was thinking about using. We’ve never been to this particular nursery before and were anxious to check it out. We took photos as we made our way through, checking out the plant selection, and taking in the charm of the retail store which looked like a reclaimed barn-like building painted all in white. We’re thinking it was probably new construction, though.

If you are in central Ohio and have never been to New Albany it is worth the trip – it was developed in the traditional Georgian architectural style, and the homes are beautiful. Lots of brick and miles and miles of white post and rail fence!

The nursery and their retail store were really attractive, and seemed like places you would like to spend some time in and become inspired with lots of ideas for your outdoors at home – the nursery/plant part of the site actually had a designed layout (that doesn’t happen very often!) which allowed it have a very organized appearance (makes it easy to wander about).

Doesn’t this look very organized? The brick paver walk is a nice touch.

In the back was a very small lake…very scenic.

The little retail store had such great rural charm!

On the side door to the store, we found this autumn wreath hanging from this beautiful scrolling vine wreath hanger.

View from inside store into the back where all the plants are located.

The display of the store’s merchandise flowed outside onto the long porch…so much charm!

Stumbled upon some creative outdoor wall art –

This metal work of art is perfect right above this door!

So elegant!

I did find some trees to consider for the fence project, but found some other favorites as well – maybe for a future project.

Lush healthy young evergreens, about 10′ in height.

Here’s an interesting tag we saw on many of the trees – lets you know the cooling effects and other benefits of planting trees.

Love this hydrangea –

This hydrangea is called ‘Vanilla Strawberry’!

All around little stages were set like this outdoor bench beneath a white pine –

The outdoor bench is a perfect touch in this little garden niche display.

This was my kind of autumn afternoon. Our favorite part was the long porch with all the outdoor decor ready to accessorize a home’s outdoor spaces.
