Fall Outdoor Decorating Idea – Harvest Basket

In the spirit of fall decorating, we  created this pretty fall accent piece – a harvest basket. Little decor projects like this are easy to make, and they add such a warm feel where they are used – perfect for that table on your porch.

All we needed to purchase were a few supplies, and along with rummaging through a storage container of home decorating items that one of us has, we were set. The small bushel basket that we used has seen better days, but it’s amazing what you can do with a little ribbon and some creativity.

We found this unique stripped burlap ribbon, and wanted so much to use it in the project. Burlap items seem to be a popular choice in decorating. We thought it would be perfect to spruce up the basic, sort of plain, basket. When we layered the green raffia (it’s sort of a muted green) over the burlap ribbon, it really came together. Using a glue gun came in handy for securing the burlap ribbon to the basket.

We filled the basket with a small box, along with crumpled newspaper, to fill the void a bit. The box helped to keep the newspaper from become flattened under the weight of the items on top. We covered all of that with dried leaves from the yard. How’s that for frugal?

The harvest items include both real and paper mache (or papier mâché as they say in France!) gourds and pumpkins, with the pumpkins being of various shapes and sizes.

The raffia was tied on the basket’s handle also, and the final touches were sprigs of orange berries in the midst of the raffia.

The basket sets atop the gathers of a bright and colorful calico print fabric.

We love using raffia in projects, and it comes in a number of great accent colors.

What fall decorating ideas have you used this year?
