8 Quick & Easy Outdoor Christmas Decorating Inspirations

If you’re looking for a little holiday decorating inspiration, and love traditional Christmas decorations as much as we do, you’re in the right place! These quick and easy outdoor Christmas decorations can be done with minimum supplies. Many of these decorations were created by using what each of us already had on hand.

It only takes a little imagination to be creative. We think you’ll agree that all of these ideas have the potential of creating your ‘house beautiful’ with some definite holiday curb appeal!

So, if you’re in need of a little inspiration…

No. 1 – Trailing Garland

Stringing evergreen garland, whether fresh or artificial, between the posts of a fence or porch railing, is one of the most familiar traditional Christmas decorations, and it never goes out of style. Use big festive red bows to ‘anchor’ the greenery at the posts.

No. 2 – ‘Hang’ a Wreath on the Chimney

It’s not always prudent to drill holes into your beautiful masonry chimney (or other masonry), and we would agree. Our solution? Place a summer trellis next to the chimney to hang the Christmas wreath!

No.3 – A Burlap Wrap

Those large clay pots on your porch look beautiful filled with annuals in the summer, but maybe they should look a bit more ‘Christmas-y’ for the holidays. We wrapped these clay pots with burlap fabric, tied a festive checked wired edge ribbon around them, and filled them with Christmas greenery. Here’s a little tidbit on how to cut burlap fabric – check out our tutorial.

No.4 – Classic Window Wreaths

Three windows and three Christmas wreaths, hung with red ribbon. One of the design principles at work here is the concept of repetition. It works really well here, and creates a very classic look.

No.5 – The Decorated White Post Mailbox

The red ribbon and garland wrapped around the white post of this mailbox is a pretty traditional look, don’t you think? And so easy to put together, too!

No.6 – Using Garden Accent Pieces

These metal garden accent pieces were so easy to decorate.

The obelisk worked perfectly as a ‘Christmas tree’, wrapped with one 9’ garland and topped with a large bow with long curving tails that fall at the side.

Below, this planter stand was perfect for this porch side vignette.

This is how we decorated it: Wrapped a lighted garland around the outside of the top shelf just below the decorative scroll work of the shelf’s edge;  filled the lantern with old fashion glass ornaments in the center of a field of garland; two pillar candles (battery-operated – it’s on the porch in a protected area); filled a big basket with pine cones on the lower shelf.

In the evening –

No.7 – Decorating Outdoor Light Fixtures

Decorating your beautiful light fixtures adds such a classic look to your home. Our parents would decorate the lamp post with garland and a strand of lights at Christmas when we were growing up – it’s wonderful that so many of those memories stay with us throughout our lives.

Just a wrap of greenery, and four small wreaths – this looks like a Christmas card!

Our light fixture idea was featured on 2IY  blog!

No.8 – Decorate The Porch Furniture

Sometimes you see a decoration you just have to have, even though you don’t know how you’ll use it. Ever been there? Maybe this year you’ll find a place for it!

This little wooden sled, that one of us has, knows all about that, and it looks adorable on the teak porch bench.

You can put traditional decorating elements into the mix and it just can’t miss – garland, red bows, and an outdoor throw pillow look right at home on that bench, too!

We hope, that if you needed some inspiration for outdoor holiday decorating at your house, you found it! Chances are that you may already have many of the supplies to do your version of these decorations, and pull together some really classic looks that you can use year after year.
