Many people love to start their gardens indoors before the winter is over. And really, that’s a good way to begin your summer garden with a little larger plant. It also can be a great way to save money, and who wouldn’t like that!
I bought a few seed packets a few years ago from a local garden store – I think one packet was an annual geranium, and two packets were perennials (English daisy and dianthus).
This is my dianthus, and it is doing fabulously –
I had never tried to start perennials from seed before, so I didn’t know what the outcome would be, or how difficult – I didn’t even know if they would sprout! Usually, I just bought perennials from various garden centers, so growing them from seed was a new adventure.
I was amazed when they sprouted, and heartily grew, and they are going strong – so much so, that I think this year they need to be divided. Here’s a helpful link if you need to know how to divide perennials.
If you grow vegetables and herbs from seed, you may be interested in this. I just can upon a seed company that sells only heirloom seeds – Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds (the website is rareseeds.com, and we have included it in our ‘Helpful Garden Links’ section). Their seeds are, to quote the website, “open-pollinated seeds: pure, natural & non-GMO”.
They have both vegetable and flower seeds. I love the idea of ‘pure and natural’ in foods. I haven’t had a vegetable or herb garden for several years, but when I start one back up, I’ll be checking out their seed catalog.
If you are of a similar thought, pop on over to their website to see what strikes your fancy! I love looking at their flower selection, too, and it has me itching for spring and summer!
Do you start your garden from seed? What type of gardens do you have?
