We think this week’s perennial would definitely make a bright and cheery impression in any landscape or garden, with its lemon yellow trumpet-shaped flowers nestled in the tips of its slender grass-like green foliage.
Sounds pretty, doesn’t it? The ‘Happy Returns’ daylily is all that! It’s a compact plant growing to 15” – 18” in both height and width, making it perfect for using it as a low border in front other taller plants, or creating a field of yellow with a mass planting of them.
Its botanical name is Hemerocallis ‘Happy Returns’. That sounds like the perfect name for a perennial that just keeps producing lovely yellow flowers over and over, again.
A plant can have many common names, but it will only have one botanical name!
Daylilies have a fibrous root system, unlike a true lily which comes from a bulb. The daylily flowers only live one day, but no need to worry because there are typically so many buds that its flowering seems to be seamless.
According to the Missouri Botanical Garden website – ‘Happy Returns’ has no serious insect or disease problems. That’s a plus! And, it does well in sun or partial shade producing repeat blooms from late spring through fall.
