Sour Cream Cookie Recipe – One of the Best Cookies Ever!

You know that saying about ‘you can’t eat just one’? The sour cream cookie is just such a delectable treat. How could a cookie miss when it’s made with sour cream and butter, and topped with an orange glaze?

It seems that our Mom has made this sour cream cookie recipe forever. The recipe may have come from the recipe section of a newspaper long ago. But we can’t remember for sure. Anyway, who ever created this cookie recipe should have won some sort of a prize.

If you can actually make it past not eating the batter, this recipe will make about 5 to 6 dozen cookies depending on size. We tweaked the amount of granulated sugar that the original recipe calls for, which is 1 1/2 cups – we use 3/4 cup.

The sour cream cookie is so versatile, it can be decorated for so many occasions –our Mom decorates them with pastel color icing at Easter, and red and green sugar at Christmas. They’re perfect for a ladies tea out on the porch, or a luncheon on the patio.

So let’s start baking! The batter will need to be chilled for about an hour, so don’t preheat the oven just yet!

Sour Cream Cookie Recipe

(Makes approx. 5 to 6 dozen)

  3 cups – flour, sifted

1 teaspoon – baking powder

1/2 teaspoon – baking soda

1/2 teaspoon  – salt

                 1 cup – butter, softened

                 3/4 cup – granulated sugar

2 eggs

         1 cup – sour cream

  1 teaspoon – vanilla,

or 2 teaspoons of orange juice

After the batter is made, refrigerate for one hour. After it has been chilled, preheat oven at 375 degrees.

Mixing:

Sift flour with the baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl, and set aside.

Gradually add the flour mixture and beat on medium speed.

Cover with plastic food wrap, and refrigerate batter for one hour before baking. The batter will overnight nicely, covered in the refrigerator, and then baked the next day.

Baking:

Cover a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Drop batter by rounded half teaspoon.

Bake for 10-12 minutes until very lightly brown round edges.

Cool on baking sheet for about 2 minutes, then remove and place on cooling racks.

After the cookies have completely cooled, top with icing/glaze.

Icing/Glaze

1/2 cup  – confectioners sugar, sifted

orange, or lemon juice –  enough to mix

Add the amount of juice to the sugar for the consistency you would like, less for icing, or more juice for a glaze. We recommend using freshly squeezed juice!

Sift the powdered sugar before adding the juice – it will prevent clumps in the icing/glaze.

This amount of confectioners sugar is from the original recipe, but we always seem to have to double or triple this amount.

Storing:

These cookies should be stored in a cookie tin or a container with a lid. They will need to be stored in single layers with a piece of wax paper, or plastic food wrap between each layer – or they will stick to one another even if they have not been iced or glazed!

We decorated these with the coming holiday in mind, making a little flag display – just an idea for the dessert table at the 4th of July cookout!
