Baked bean dishes are such a great side dish for cookouts, picnics, and fall tailgate parties. Yes, it is very easy to open a can of baked beans, but they just can’t match the flavor of a homemade recipe. This homemade baked beans with bacon recipe uses three different kinds of beans, and just a touch of sweetness.
Our Mom used to make homemade baked beans for family get-togethers when we were kids. Everyone loved her recipe, and looked forward to having some of her homemade baked beans.
So a call to our Mom was in order to get her recipe. Her recipe called for dry navy beans which naturally had to be cooked before the baked bean dish could be made. Making bean dishes with dry beans takes longer to prepare, but this recipe takes little time to put together since we used canned beans – using the canned beans didn’t compromise our Mom’s recipe at all! It is every bit as good.
This baked bean dish has just the right amount of sweetness, and a great flavor from the bacon and onion. You can mix all the ingredients together in the casserole dish you will use to bake the beans.
This recipe uses crispy bacon, which needs to be prepared before making the recipe.
Preheat oven at 300°.
Baked Beans with Bacon
(Makes approx. 15 half cup servings)
1 can Great Northern beans, drain completely
1 can Cannellini beans, drain completely
1 can Black beans, drain completely – reserve ¼ cup of the liquid
1 medium onion, finely chopped
3/4 cup catsup
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
1 cup crispy bacon, crumbled
1. Open the 3 cans of beans and drain completely, reserving the 1/4 cup of liquid.
2. Place drained beans in a 1- 1/2 quart covered casserole.
3. Add the chopped onion, mustard, and brown sugar to the beans. In a separate bow, mix together the catsup and the reserved bean liquid, and add to the casserole.
4. Mix everything gently with the beans. Add the crumbled bacon, and gently mix until everything is coated. The canned beans typically have salt already added to them, so it may not be necessary to add more.
Place in preheated oven (300°), and bake covered for 1 to 1-1/2 hours, until onion has softened. Keep covered the entire time.
The bacon will soften a bit as the beans bake. If crispy bacon is preferred, omit putting it in the dish, and serve the crumbled bacon as a topping along side the casserole.
Hope you give this a try!

I’m from New England and I’ve never made baked beans. This looks like a recipe I can handle. Thanks for sharing it with us on foodie friday.
Diane, thanks for stopping by! I guess you don’t see homemade baked beans too often, but this was really easy to make!
