A few years ago, I made cupcakes with snowman faces for the kids at the family Christmas dinner at our Mom’s. They are so cute, and they look like they would take more time to decorate than they actually do. And when it comes to the kids, it’s always great to find cute cupcake decorating ideas!
We made chocolate cupcakes, but you can use any cake flavor. The important thing is to use a white or off white color frosting since it is a snowman face. We used a white buttercream frosting, which is so delicious with the chocolate cake.
After the cupcakes are made, and then frosted, the decorating begins. Three ingredients are used to create the snowman’s face: mini chocolate chips, orange slice candy (for a dozen cupcakes, one piece is more than enough), and melt away mints in pastel colors.
Snowman Cupcakes
(Enough for 12 cupcakes)
1 bag of mini chocolate chips (each cupcake uses only 7 or 8 chips)
orange slice candies (one piece is more than enough for a dozen cupcakes)
24 melted away mints (approx. 3/4″ wide at the bottom)
Place one mini chocolate chip for each eye, and 5 to 6 mini chips for the smile.
Cut the orange slice candy for the nose – just a small piece is all that is needed.
The melt away mints are used to make the earmuffs. We found them in the bulk candy section at the grocery. They have a peaked top, and the peak goes into the frosting, so that the flat bottom of the mint is visible. The mints we found had nonpareils on the bottoms which fits right in with the snowman theme. Twist the mint into the frosting and a bit into the cake to anchor it.
These snowman cupcakes are perfect for the festive Christmas season, but they really are in season all winter long!
