Golden pound cake, blueberry compote, fresh strawberries and blueberries, and fresh whipped cream make this a pretty, and, oh so delicious dessert perfect for an all-American holiday cookout. What makes this dessert a special treat?
It is served parfait style! And, it just looks so fun, that both the kids and the adults will love it. The fresh berries make it refreshing, and the pound cake adds its own traditional richness. The pound cake is cut into ‘fingers’, which reminds us a bit of tiramisu cake fingers.
If you use a store bought pound cake, keep in mind they are typically smaller than one you would bake at home. We did bake a pound cake for this dessert, so it was about 4 1/2 inches wide, which was perfect for the 4 inch (not including the stem) parfaits we used.
The ingredients for this patriotic parfait dessert idea are simple and it is easy to put together. If you have prepped everything beforehand, you can put the parfaits together right before serving them. If you don’t have parfait glasses, you can certainly use bowls!
The Patriotic Parfait
(Serves 4)
4 slices of pound cake, approx. 3/4″ thick slices
1 1/2 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
1 cup fresh blueberries
3/4 cup blueberry compote
1 pint whipping cream, whipped
Directions
Place 1 to 2 teaspoons of compote into the bottom of each parfait.
Cut each slice of pound cake horizontally into 3 equal ‘fingers’.
Place 3 fingers into each parfait. Make sure they are all the way down into the compote. They soak up some of the compote – yummy when you get to the bottom of the dessert!
Next, place the fresh berries in between the pound cake fingers and in the center, in a random mix.
Place another teaspoon of compote in the center on top of the berries.
Place a generous dollop of fresh whipped cream on top,
And then put another teaspoon of compote over the whipped cream.
Place these delicious red, white, & blue desserts on a tray
and head outside to serve the guests at your holiday cookout – perfect for the 4th of July! Or Memorial Day!
If you make the parfaits ahead of time, be sure to keep them refrigerated!
Happy 4th!
